The original habitats of the reindeer, domesticated from the European reindeer, are the mountain areas. However, the modern reindeer herding area also includes large swamps and forests in the Southern Lapland. Reindeer migrate as they seek nutrition between the summer and winter pastures. In the, summer the reindeer prefer swamps and other lush areas. In the autumn, they move to mushroom forests and further to moorlands with lichen undergrowth and as the snow cover gets deeper, to the spruce copses to eat beard moss. However, nowadays the frugal natural winter nutrition has lead into winter feeding of large number of reindeer, particularly in Southern Lapland.
